Notes from the fandom(s)

JKR and Pterry being at odds* is like having your parents fighting: you don't know which side to take, but you just wish it would stop.

He's right; the media has overhyped her at the expense of other authors. But it's not her fault that the media can't get enough of her, and clearly the interviewer's the one who made her (and moreso himself) sound like an ass.

I hate how smug and superior the Pratchett fen are acting, and I hate how childish the HP fen are acting. And I love Neil Gaiman so much.

*Well, it's not even that, cause JKR hasn't responded.

But anyway, enough about fandom. I'm sitting here, bored and alone in Oxford. Rec me something. Something you wrote (particularly if you wrote it/started it during June), something you like a lot, something that's so bad it's good, anything.

I dunno, it looked more to me like Pterry was complaining about the way in which the newsmedia cover Rowling. (And I must admit, Rowling claiming she didn't know she was writing fantasy does sound a bit daft to me.)

I definitely agree. I don't think he's trying to say that it's her fault either; the BBC tried to say that for him.

That thing about not knowing she was writing fantasy has to have been taken out of context. I mean, I can understand not setting out to write "typical" fantasy and ending up with it, but you'd think it would become apparent to you somewhere in there.
