I kinda wrote this story? It is called Nice Place To Visit. calcitrix- who is totally my hero and who stepped in at the very last of last minutes- has put together some damn fine art, which I will have to get around to properly squeeing about after class.

Now I have to put on some pants and go to K'iche, and Maya, and Linguistics, and also a lecture. BUT I WILL BE BACK AFTER THAT. KEEP THE INTERNET WARM FOR ME WHILE I AM GONE.

I read this at work on Friday (shh), which means I read it too fast, and skimmed part of the beginning, but then I got into it and I enjoyed it a lot. It addressed the same qualms readers have - okay, that I had, not to generalize - at the right times, like the question about institutionalized sex slavery. I liked how it explored a lifestyle without being all about the porn - or rather, it explored the lifestyle and made sure both partners were on the same page so then there could be sex. :) I liked the distinction made, as it so rarely is, between dominance/submission, liking pain, and enjoying bondage. I liked that the citizens spoke and reacted like real people. I liked that Rodney held out and was still himself, not too angsty, still with that little adorable "oh my god I did it!" afterwards. I liked that John's reaction to the drug was partly the drug and partly himself - I absolutely believe, as Rodney exclaimed afterwards, that John has been struggling with a natural tendency to submission but lack of a person to trust to take care of him that way when he needs it. I thought John's PTSD/coming to terms with himself/with Rodney was well done - so thick you could feel it. And I liked lots of little touches along the way - the verb conjugations, and the Gor joke, and ... crap, I've already forgotten half the stuff, but I kept thinking of them yesterday.

Before I was done reading, I wanted John to get clean so he could prove to Rodney that he was serious, and then I wanted him to get to go back on the drug so he could thoroughly enjoy himself! That was a small tragedy. In a completely appropriate and delicious/painful-for-the-reader kind of way. At the same time, it's all the more satisfying that by the end, John could get back into that headspace with Rodney without any chemical influence.

In short - I know you've been stuck with writing lately, and maybe you're just recovering from producing this, but I think it's very good. If people have problems with the depiction of slavery, etc., I don't think it's because the story falls short in making its argument.

I felt like it was important, y'know? So often, I see characters get together and just immediately know each other's kinks, like it's a given (not that it's not hot in its own way), when in reality, it's this huge, complicated, contradictory thing.

I think this story just took a lot out of me. I feel almost like I've got postpartum depression (cause, in fairness, it'd have been faster to have a baby than write this story). But I'm so glad you liked it! Thank you!
