DAY THREE: TURNABOUT SAMURAI
or, Where am I going to get another cigarette holder at this hour?
Defense Attorney: Phoenix Wright
Side Bar: Maya Fey, Mia Fey
Prosecutor: Miles Edgeworth
Defendant: Will Powers
Victim: Jack Hammer
Play Time: 2 hours, 37 min.
My main complaint about this case is the layout of Global Studios. Much like Fey Manor, it takes too damn long to get anywhere, and there's an unusually large amount of step-and-fetch in this case.
I've always been sort of ambivalent about this case. It's not my favorite, I don't dislike it, I just don't have many strong opinions about it. I think it's partially because I played Farewell, My Turnabout first. Or maybe I just replayed it too quickly. I think I played it like three weeks ago while I was hella bored. Also, it's really goddamned long, without really having a good in-universe reason to be.
Trial 1 starts Edgeworth's complete inability to get his witnesses to give any sort of identifying information. I'm not sure what it is about him. Maybe it's because he's a complete dick until Trial 3. This trial also made me notice that until Gumshoe gets his new coat in T&T, he, Edgeworth, and Phoenix make a very pleasing set of additive primary colors.
Will is, to me, one of the most endearing characters in the games. I find I want to pinch his cheeks and/or take him home to meet my momma. I feel much the same way about Gumshoe. And in a circuitous kind of way, I can't help liking Sal (even after that one doujin, and DON'T ACT like you didn't read it, and NO, if you didn't, I'm not telling you what's in it, because I'm trying to erase it from my mind with liquor and all the P/E porn I can FIND).
And speaking of Sal and inappropriate things:
Moving on.
This is the first case where you manipulate people with Mia's D-cups full of justice (sweet!). I'm not sure how I like that as a gameplay tactic. I do, however, like to look at them, so I guess it's okay.
I find I don't have many deep insights to this case. I was going to say that it doesn't have many ties to the other cases, but that's a damn lie. It sets up the tertiary story arc (primary being the Fey clan, secondary being Phoenix, Edgeworth, and Larry, but I think you can argue the toss on that one), which provides almost all of the pop culture universe of the games. It also sets up some of the development of the secondary storyline, with Edgeworth helping Phoenix out for the first time. All that stuff, though, is more interesting than the initial case itself.
I haven't said anything about how gay Edgeworth is for Phoenix all review, have I?
Maya: C'mon, Nick! Tell me! What's the deal with you and Edgeworth?
It'll have to wait for tomorrow, because now it's time for:
