"You beat the other girls" "With whips and chains!" "to the bride's bouquet" "That too..."

When a (mostly) real world canon does something incredibly stupid because they did no research and/or they didn't think anybody would notice, is it appropriate to write an AU version of events that actually makes sense?

And does it make it worse or better that said ret-conning would take place in what was already a blatant self-insertion?

Just wondering.
