1. I will never understand the internet.

I really love all of you guys, and I am aware that, for whatever strange reason, you guys love me, and you have no idea how much I appreciate your love. That being said, I've never been what you'd call a popular writer. The only fandoms I've even been an MNF in are Hellsing and Mythbusters, which have a combined total of 38 fans. It's just not my lot in life, y'know? And I'm past caring about it, because I'd rather make my flist happy than get a thousand comments.

So I have a mystery on my hands. I am PERPLEXED. Go the Fuck to Sleep has gotten 57 kudos on the AO3 and 155 (!!!!!!!!!) saves on Delicious (even with the Delicious drama) and is about to tie with Nice Place to Visit as my highest hit count story on the AO3. And I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how this happened. I mean, XMFC is still a really big fandom, but my other XMFC stories aren't half as popular. The really mind-boggling thing about it is that there are no comments at the AO3 and no recs, at least that I've been able to find, and I have been googling like a madwoman trying to figure this shit out.

I understand that it has a funny title and is for a big fandom, but come the fuck on.

2. In my weekend theme of doing whatever the hell I want to do and not seeing anyone, I went to the aforementioned arthouse theatre that I so love and saw Welt am Draht (World on a Wire). Really an amazing piece of work, and definitely ahead of its time; it foreshadows stuff like Blade Runner, The Matrix, and particularly Inception. If you have seen any of these films, or if you are paying any attention at all, you will already know the twist about thirty minutes ahead of time, but it didn't take any of the fun out of it, for me. It is hella long and sometimes overwrought in the way German cinema is (I love you, my German friends, but I know you know what I'm talking about), but it's definitely worth it.

What I find particularly interesting, though, is the ending. I think it says something about the evolution of sci-fi in the last forty years that World on a Wire actually has a happy ending, or as happy as could be expected. Blade Runner and Inception have totally ambiguous endings, and at the end of The Matrix (the first one; I don't remember how Matrix Revolutions ended. Does anyone, really?), they're still stuck in a dystopia with no real hope of getting out.

If you're thinking about it, World on a Wire has an ambiguous ending too; Stiller makes it into the "real world", but he's really back where he started from- who says the real world isn't another simulation? It's also pretty dark for the people still trapped in the simulation, both the middle level and Simulacron, but the movie doesn't explore that. Eva and good!Stiller win, evil!Stiller loses. We've just got such an expectation as sci-fi fans- particularly fans of sci-fi noir- that the happy ending isn't coming, and it's really interesting to me that one of the first cinematic examples of the genre ends well.

So! World on a Wire: pretty great. It is presently touring the US and is available on Region 2 DVD, but according to my wikipedia learnings it was circulated on the internets before it was restored, so I imagine you could find it if you knew where to look.

And now I am going to smoke a thousand cigarettes and drink ALL THE WHISKEY. Oh movies from the seventies.

Hm, that is a mystery re: story kudos etc. *mystery emoticon*

Any idea where a person can get hold of a copy of Welt am Draht? No luck on Netflix.

IDK, honestly. Torrents are probably your best bet, but there are a couple of movie-sharing comms on LJ that could probably get you the hook up.

Yup, cool. Just wondered if you might know, but I suppose seeing something in the theater doesn't make one an expert in where to find it otherwise. :) Thanks! I liked your review & want to see the movie at some point.

ngl, when I saw MNF, I was like...Monday Night Football? This sentence makes no sense. Then I used my brain and realised what you were saying.
