sabinelagrande: (inception - wary yusuf is wary)
Here's the thing: I don't really read gen. I am vaguely aware that, in some circles, this makes me a bad person. But for some reason, Inception seems to be the exception to my shippiness. I keep thinking, "Yeah, yeah, fucking, whatever- what is the team up to?!" So here's some stuff I've been liking.

butterfly dreams by [livejournal.com profile] formerlydf
(Inception, Arthur, 1974 words, G)
Here's how good this story is: I didn't even finish reading it before putting it on this list. This is just such a gorgeous look at Arthur.

intuitia by [livejournal.com profile] elendraug
(Inception, Yusuf, 448 words, PG)
Yay, Yusuf! This is a neat little glimpse of him and his cat, pre-canon.

Inside Arthur by [livejournal.com profile] potboy
(Inception, Eames, Arthur, Yusuf, 974 words, G)
What really strikes me about this fic is the wealth of description. It's very sensual.

Her Morning Elegance by [livejournal.com profile] tied_in_a_knot
(Inception, Ensemble, 2458 words, PG, mentions of abuse)
Oh, team. I love them all so, and these snapshots of all their lives are lovely.

Autoimmunity by [livejournal.com profile] mercurial_wit
(Inception, Eames, 5590 words, PG)
I really just cannot get enough of Eames backstory, and this fic does a beautiful job of it.

The Esteemed Mr Eames (After the Talented Mr Ripley) by [livejournal.com profile] apiphile
(Inception, pre-Arthur/Eames, 2895 words, PG)
Okay, yes, I lied, there is one thing on here that isn't really gen- though it's totally cool, because it's not really all that shippy either. But, I couldn't not include it, because it's just such a pretty story. I really love the way the author uses words, and it's a really cool look at Eames.

Yes, yes, darlings, I am a day late and a dollar short. In my defence, I am with my parents, who expect me to, like, interact with people, which is extremely taxing. Also, I wrote a thousand words yesterday. So anyway, here is a little Arthur/Eames to make up for it. (I am still waiting for someone to write Yusuf and Eames's Mombasa Adventure.)

give my gun away by [archiveofourown.org profile] imogenedisease
(Inception, Arthur/Eames, 848 words, Teen and Up)
Oblivious!Arthur pleases me so. I quite like Eames in this one, particularly at the end.

The World, Double by [archiveofourown.org profile] jibrailis
(Inception, Arthur/Eames, 3432 words, Explicit)
This story is hot and sort of heart-achy, plus it's got team action. Dude, it's even got Eames's mom. What's not to love?

Not Dreaming Now by [archiveofourown.org profile] jennova
(Inception, Arthur/Eames, 1314 words, Teen and Up)
There seem to be a lot of stories where Arthur is in love with Eames's projection, but this is my favorite. Ariadne and Eames's voices are just right.

Coming Back, Coming Down by [archiveofourown.org profile] spuffyduds
(Inception, Arthur/Eames, 1122 words, Mature)
Who doesn't love nipple clamps? Someone who doesn't know what's hot, that's who.

sabinelagrande: (dc - glorious golden booster)
God, you guys. So I went out to dinner with my folks, and my godmother got me drunk, so consequently, I'm not much in the mood for reading a bunch of fanfic (though perhaps I will get this Inception porn finished, whoops, my plans are showing). But! I have an ace up my sleeve! Here are some comic books you should be reading!

Shirtlifter by Steve MacIsaac (Prism Comics)
This is one of those comics I stumbled on by accident at the Comic-Con. Somehow, I ended up at the LGBT romance comics panel last year, and I happened to hear Steve MacIsaac talk. And y'all. This comic is only on issue three (I say issues, but they're really like short compilations), and it is one of the best comics I have ever read. It really speaks to my heart, you know? It gets down into a lot of the issues that I think are common to most queer people: who to tell, how to tell, how to deal. It's really understated, slice of life type stuff, and it's really powerful.

Also it has a lot of bears fucking. Don't judge me. I have a type.

Anyway, here is a short taste of one of my favorite bits of the second issue. Other bits are scattered around online and on the author's website.

Rex Libris by James Turner (SLG)
And here is another comic I stumbled on by accident at the Comic-Con! Dude. It is about a librarian. Who battles monsters. To collect overdue library books. I suspect it is extra hilarious to me, as I used to be a librarian, but I feel like it's something we can all enjoy. And at only 12 issues so far, there's not much to catch up on.

Starman by James Robinson, Tony Harris, Peter Snejbjerg, et al. (DC)
Hear me out, okay? I know this comic is fairly popular among DC fans, but a lot of other fans overlook it because it's a superhero comic. Allow me to give you a brief anecdote that explains why Starman is great: I was once in the local comic shop, eavesdropping on a conversation the clerk was having with another customer.

"Here's why I don't buy Superman," he said. "If I woke up tomorrow morning and had laser beams coming out of my eyeballs, my first thought wouldn't be, 'Let me run out and get some spandex.' It would be, 'Well, I guess I need another black t-shirt.'"

And folks, Jack Knight is that superhero; he starts off as an antique dealer and ends up fighting crime. I love this book for its reverence of old DC but its willingness to create something new, something accessible to someone who's not necessarily familiar.

There are eighty issues, and I've never had a problem finding the trades- our local library had the first five or six. The whole series is being republished right now in omnibus editions; they run thirty bucks a pop, but they're worth every penny. They include a bunch of stuff, like letter pages, that wasn't in the original trades, and they're just really nicely put together books.

Conversion is easily my favorite episode of SGA. Blue John tear-assing around Atlantis = very yes.

The Taming of the Fly by [livejournal.com profile] quasar273
(SGA, John/Rodney, ~13000 words, NC-17)
I love John in this story. I think he's kind of adorable when he's nonverbal.

The Blues by [livejournal.com profile] aliaras
(SGA, John/Elizabeth, 1199 words, NC-17, dubcon)
There is seriously not enough blue!John dubconning on Elizabeth. I mean, FFS.

Out of Time by [livejournal.com profile] darkhavens
(SGA, John/Rodney, 2500 words, NC-17)
Mmm. I do love Rodney in this story, hopeless in the face of his xeno kink. It's kind of meta, in a way.

Sequelae by [livejournal.com profile] spike21
(SGA, John+Rodney, 26000 words, R)
Do not approach this story with an intense amount of tissues within ready reach. John and Rodney are trapped on Earth and, basically, screwed. It doesn't get any better.

shed your skin by [livejournal.com profile] seperis

John, all tied up at Rodney's mercy and suitable for ravishing. Who can resist that?

I actually really hate guns in real life; I've never fired one and I don't ever plan to. But despite that, or perhaps because of it, I have a special place in my little black heart for gunplay. So, here are some fine examples of the genre.

Suck by lovelokast
(SGA, John/Rodney, 1041 words, NC-17)
Mmm. This is particularly dirtybadwrong. I highly approve.

New Found Glory by [livejournal.com profile] moonlettuce
(SGA, John/Rodney, 554 words, NC-17)
I've recced this before, on the dirty talk list, but I'm reccing it again, because it is really hot.

Target Practice by [livejournal.com profile] cathalin
(SGA, John/Rodney, 4920 words, NC-17)
This one is lighter than the others, without being any less hot.

At Gunpoint by [livejournal.com profile] out_there
(SGA, John/Rodney, 1975 words, NC-17)
It should not be any surprise at all that I have a competency kink, and this story plays into it quite nicely. Rodney is the one with the gun, for once, and he is very good with it.

Oh, D/s AU. It’s something I feel like I read a lot and barely ever like. I really like it in theory, but in practice, it often ends up being a justification for OOC behavior, nonsensical worldbuilding, and jacked up moon logic. So here are some stories that don't fall victim to that syndrome.

Take Clothes Off As Directed by [livejournal.com profile] helenish
(SGA, John/Rodney, ~11000 words, NSFW)
This story has some problems, but it's still one of my favorite SGA fics- it was, in point of fact, the first SGA story I ever read.

The Directedverse by [personal profile] aris_tgd
(House, multiple pairings, mostly NSFW)
This is actually the story that lead me to the previous entry. In a lot of ways, I like it better; it's not a response in the same way that Take Clothes Off As Directed was, so the world is constructed somewhat differently. On the whole, it feels less like genderswap-in-hiding and more like a fully realized D/s universe.

The Spaces Inside by [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan
(SGA, John/Rodney, 7664 words, NC-17)
I really like this story because of how different it is than most D/s AU. It is, at its heart, a love story, but it's about two deeply fucked up people who start off in a fucked up place, and it's really beautiful and sort of heartbreaking.

Because I am in the vein, and because of the story I am working on, it is time to visit one of my favorite genres of stories ever: the dirtybadwrong story, wherein people do really terrible things to each other for terrible reasons, and it’s totally hot.

As usual, I apologize for nothing.

Make the Devil Feel Surprise by [personal profile] telesilla
(SGA, John/Rodney, Jeannie McKay/Ronon, Elizabeth/Radek, 48000 words, NC-17, underage, consent issues)
Mirror!John gets underage!Rodney as a present from Jeannie. What’s not to love? This is Colonel Sadist at his very finest; asses are kicked and names are taken, and evil triumphs over slightly less evil.

Incision by Kharessa Bloodrose
(SGA, John/Rodney, 7259 words, NC-17, non-con, torture)
God, I love this story to the depths of my little black heart. John gets off on seeing Rodney tortured, and Rodney gets a bad case of Stockholm Syndrome.

Frenzy by Mithreon
(SGA, John/Rodney, Ronon/Teyla, Ronon/Teyla/Rodney, 24895 words, NC-17, violence, non-con)
Oh, Wraith enzyme sex. What would we ever do without you? This is an AU of The Lost Boys/The Hive, wherein John as been all shot up with the enzyme too, and proceeds to do really terrible things to Rodney. But, strangely enough, they manage to have a happy ending.

Into the Blue by Lady Grey
(SG-1, Jack/Daniel, 12640 words, NC-17, non-con)
Let me preface by saying her author’s note is bad and she should feel bad, but I am recommending this story anyway, because I really love it (and because the version I originally had didn’t have the author’s note). It always bothered me that in AMTDI, the aliens always know which one is the toppy one and which one is the subby one, but this story flips that on its head.

Hello, friends list. While not saving eagle babies and investigating the deepest parts of the Mariana Trench, I have prepared for you a set of recommendations so beautiful and lovely, each one is like a diamond that I have cut for you with my bare abs while singing opera.

The Dark Side of the Moon by [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan
(SGA, Gen, ~2500 words, G)
What can I say of Teyla Emmagan? She is a lady of such surpassing beauty and strength that two galaxies are necessary to contain her. In this story, she undertakes an adventure of such magnitude that I weep that I did not perform it myself.

Two Sides by [personal profile] circadienne
(Star Trek, Gen, 3886 words, Teen)
A noted graduate of Success College, Nyota Uhura is a talented linguist. A less manly man would make a suggestive comment about that, but Uhura is far too dignified and beautiful to be subjected to such treatment. This story examines her life in two timelines. That’s right. Similar to Teyla Emmagan, she is too much for one.

Permission by [personal profile] lamardeuse
(SGA, Weir/Caldwell, 1887 words, Teen and Up)
Elizabeth Weir. Does she require romanticizing? No. Does she deserve it? Always. Thankfully, there is a fine space captain waiting to romanticize her in the manner of her choosing. Sadly, he isn’t me, but rest assured, he does smell like me.

push-pull by [livejournal.com profile] quasiradiant
(SGA, Weir/Teyla, 419 words, G)
What is twice as radiant and special as one lady? Two ladies, placed gently together in the type of beautiful, dreamlike story to which they are best suited.

I’m on a meme.

Last Will and Testament by [personal profile] cesperanza
(SGA, John/Rodney, 141 K, NSFW, incest)
God, I just die every time I even think about this story. John picks up Rodney in a bar, and everything is just downhill from there. And not only is it hilarious, it’s also a quite well-executed action story.

Short and Stout by [livejournal.com profile] xela_fic
(SGA, John/Rodney, 1700 words, PG-13)
John has to convince Rodney that there are better things in life than being a teapot. I feel like that’s all I need to say.

The Day The Truth Serum Got In Everyone's Coffee by [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon
(SGA, multiple pairings, 441 words, SFW)
Here is a story that does exactly what it says on the tin, and I cackled over it until I think I hurt something.

Missionary Position by [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone
(SGA, John/Rodney, ~3000 words, NC-17)
Rodney saves the day by giving the Wraith The Talk. With examples. And Ronon’s help.

Everybody's Fool by [livejournal.com profile] z_rayne
(SGA, Rodney/everyone, short, NC-17)
This was written for [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn’s brilliant Badfic Summary Mini-Challenge, all of which is hilarious, but this one is my favorite. Told in the form of FF.net-style chapter summaries, it is truly epic.

One Leg at a Time by Mallory Klohn
(SGA, John/Rodney, ~14500 words, NC-17)
This story is very near and dear to my heart. John is extremely dismayed about Rodney’s- and anyone else’s- failure to wear pants at all times. I, too, have pants angst, so this story is far funnier to me than it probably should be..

Zelenkamatch.com by [livejournal.com profile] lillyjk and [livejournal.com profile] newkidfan
(SGA, John/Rodney, SFW)
The story of Zelenka’s matchmaking service, told entirely in screencaps from Duet.

This Is Jim. Say "Hello, Jim!" by [livejournal.com profile] katharynne and [livejournal.com profile] anadapta0801
(Star Trek, Kirk/everyone, mildly NSFW)
And!
Hello, Rodney! by [livejournal.com profile] rhymer23
(SGA, John/Rodney, 2800 words, PG-13)
Two stories that start off in the same place, and end up at EPIC. I’m convinced that anything combined with Dick and Jane is hilarious.

Twenty-Four Hours with a Rodneysaur by Moonloon and Spaggel
(SGA, Gen, SFW)
This story is so adorable, because Rodney is just the cutest little dinosaur ever, and of course it falls to John to wrangle him for a day.

The Pegasus Tinies: A Dreadful Abecedarium, with Selected Illustrations by [livejournal.com profile] argosy and [livejournal.com profile] _kiden
(SGA, Gen, G)
My love of Edward Gorey knows no bounds, so I love this to little pieces. The illustrations are just perfect.

Confiteor by [livejournal.com profile] busaikko and [livejournal.com profile] almost_clara
(SGA, John/Rodney, G)
And now for something completely different: this story, told from Zelenka’s viewpoint, is dark and beautiful and heart-clenchy, all in very few words.

Welcome to Thirty Days of Recs! It does exactly what it says on the tin. As always, my Delicious is where all this stuff lives, because I DO NOT HAVE TIME TO REC 1000 STORIES, Y'ALL.

I realize it’s not the most popular of sentiments, but I really like a good teen AU. There’s something about that time in your life, how everything is so important and all your emotions are so close to the surface, that makes for really visceral reading. Here are some stories that really get down into that experience and convey it very clearly.

Second Time by [archiveofourown.org profile] lamardeuse (SGA, John/Rodney, 2940 words, Explicit)
I was going to say, “The reason you should read this is this line:” but then I found like a half a dozen lines that fit in that blank. Suffice it to say that John and Rodney are sixteen and fifteen, respectively, and they meet at a party and make out during a Maple Leafs game. It is adorable.

Sailors, Convicts, Scarlet Women by [personal profile] thingswithwings (Mythbusters, Jamie/Adam, 8139 words, Teen and Up)
Adam is the new(ish) kid in school, and Jamie is, well, Jamie, and this story does such a good job of encorporating so much of them and their lives. It all feels really true and real and gorgeous.

do. by [livejournal.com profile] velocitygrass (SGA, John/Rodney, 3372 words, NC-17)
Oh, that most important of high school experiences: falling in love with one of your teachers. This story is kind of achy in places and totally hot in others, and Rodney’s horrible plan to seduce John is EXACTLY what teenaged Rodney McKay would think is a good idea.

17.5: A Love Story by [livejournal.com profile] helenish (SGA, John/Rodney, John/OFCs, ~23000 words, NC-17)
I hesitated to include this one, because Rodney’s not actually a teenager, but has instead been deaged by an alien device, and that’s totally another rec list. I had to, though, because what makes this story so memorable is Rodney as a teenager and how much it sucks to be him. John can only sit idly by, and, oh. Boys.

That's all for today! If there's a rec list you'd like to see, please to commenting.
