Dear Joe Mallozzi, Brad Wright, and the rest of you jokers,

I was going to write a long rant about how pissing off your fanbase is a bad idea, and if you're going to say, "You just don't get it" to a whole bunch of science fiction fans (read: overeducated sarcastic jerks with too much time on their hands), you better hope like hell that you're right and they're wrong, and how you can all generally just eat me.

But then I realized everything I needed to say could be summed up in cat macros. So,

Of course, any time you say anything, I'm all

and it's hard not to think

But I read it, y'know? And as predicted, you're like

and I'm like

Then you're all

and I'm all

And then you're all

[Image removed due to a copyright claim. Was a picture of a sad cat in front of a laptop that read "they r make fun of me".

And to whoever made the claim- sorry for reupping it. Photobucket didn't tell me there was a copyright claim on it, or I wouldn't have.]

And I'm all

But seriously, it's been a long day, and

so, in conclusion:

Love,

Heh.

Via [livejournal.com profile] nightdog_barks, did you see this cogent SGU critique/rebuttal/smackdown from the Chicago Tribune? http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2009/11/stargate-universe-syfy-.html

They work quite well, cause instead of spending an hour writing an angry rant, I spent ten minutes looking at pictures of cats. Life is better for it!

YOU ARE MY HERO.

Why didn't I think of this solution before Dragon*Con? I could have just had posters of cat macros made so that I could wave them around any time Kevin Grazier talked about how great he was and how his science was the only science, fo' realz, y'all.

THIS. Rock on.

God, I really hate these guys. As if I didn't have enough reasons, I was just reading about the "Water" episode of SGU, which recycles the A-plot of "Hide and Seek" from SGA! A flying darkness entity swarm of alien bugs attacks a dude and endangers them all, while sucking much-needed power water from their supplies, and they solve the crisis by luring the entity swarm through the Stargate with power water and closing the 'gate.

Who keeps giving these people money? They're awful! I can't believe they get millions of dollars per episode and they just waste it like this, ripping off other shows and even recycling themselves. Don't they have any shame?

Date: 2009-11-10 09:35 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gaffsie.livejournal.com
Seriously? Couldn't they have chosen a slightly less iconic SGA episode to rip off?

Date: 2009-11-10 12:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] almostnever.livejournal.com
No kidding. I'm beginning to think they pissed off all those long-time Stargate fans on purpose in their efforts to get younger fans and the Battlestar Galactica audience. I think they were hoping to reel in new viewers who wouldn't recognize that they're repeating their same lazy schtick. The SG1 and SGA audiences have seen it all before!

Date: 2009-11-10 08:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aliaras.livejournal.com
If they're trying to get the BSG folk, they're doing it wrong. You don't draw in the audience by kinda-ripping-off, you draw them in by using the same things that made the original show awesome (complex characters and situations, long arcs that still make sense in the context of a single episode, etc) in a new and different way.

Date: 2009-11-10 09:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] almostnever.livejournal.com
Yep. And the ratings for SGU are about the same, or worse, than SGA's ratings, so they're not drawing in the additional audience they intended to find. *schadenfreude!*

"Bu-but we did character flashbacks like Lost, and everything's grim and some people are assholes like on BSG! Why aren't people tuning in?"

IMO, it's because these writers were barely competent at churning out pulpy, goony gee-whiz sci-fi by simplistically ripping off the likes of Trek and Star Wars. Trying to rip off more complex shows is demonstrating exactly how limited their abilities really are.

I mean, this whole thing was perfect and made me happy and, y'know, less stabby, but I particularly love the last one. And am now scheming about making many more, with my own unsuspecting classmates.

We're 4 episodes into it, and it's telling when Son #1 (an avid fan of SF) turns and says "This is boring" and Teenage Fangirl's comment is "I can't tell any of them apart, and I really don't care about them".

And the general family attitude of 2 SF-loving adults and 2 small mammals is "Let's just try and watch a few more" NOT because it's gripping and compelling and because we care about what happens to the characters, but "because maybe it will get better". Well that's a sad sad commentary. :)

As he says in your link'SGU' seems to be a love it or hate it sort of show. and the answer is YES, we don't like it not because we don't like him (although that's a perfectly good reason), but because it's clear that it sucks*.

My crystal ball says that if the show does fail, he'll pull out all the stops and blame it on the undeserving bad reviews and those mean, bad fans, never admitting that it was because it sucked.

I haven't watched any episodes of SGU - not because it's not shown in my country, but because of all the disappointment I've read from all sorts of different people. I'm a huge fan of both SG1 and Atlantis, and I was eagerly awaiting SGU - but then everyone's reaction got me disappointed. And it seems it's not getting any better. I only have articles and comments to know what's wrong with the show, and I'm not saying I won't give it a try if it comes my way, but...

Nevertheless, even without knowing exactly what's going on, the cat macros had me rolling on the floor. It's perfection itself. :-P

my god, yes. okay. I thought it was weird when I saw the way that SPN engaged with fandom, but at least they do it in a joking and accepting manner. I'm getting sick of the sg franchise saying, "oh, we know what we want and we'll give it to you!" and then when we explain, "No, your concept is for crap, and you keep killing the things we LIKE about your shows," they come back with a "you're stupid, this is what you want, we don't want to talk about it anymore"

cat macros = da bomb. you = awesome.
