Dear Joe Mallozzi, Brad Wright, and the rest of you jokers,

I was going to write a long rant about how pissing off your fanbase is a bad idea, and if you're going to say, "You just don't get it" to a whole bunch of science fiction fans (read: overeducated sarcastic jerks with too much time on their hands), you better hope like hell that you're right and they're wrong, and how you can all generally just eat me.

But then I realized everything I needed to say could be summed up in cat macros. So,

Of course, any time you say anything, I'm all

and it's hard not to think

But I read it, y'know? And as predicted, you're like

and I'm like

Then you're all

and I'm all

And then you're all

[Image removed due to a copyright claim. Was a picture of a sad cat in front of a laptop that read "they r make fun of me".

And to whoever made the claim- sorry for reupping it. Photobucket didn't tell me there was a copyright claim on it, or I wouldn't have.]

And I'm all

But seriously, it's been a long day, and

so, in conclusion:

Love,

Seriously? Couldn't they have chosen a slightly less iconic SGA episode to rip off?

No kidding. I'm beginning to think they pissed off all those long-time Stargate fans on purpose in their efforts to get younger fans and the Battlestar Galactica audience. I think they were hoping to reel in new viewers who wouldn't recognize that they're repeating their same lazy schtick. The SG1 and SGA audiences have seen it all before!

If they're trying to get the BSG folk, they're doing it wrong. You don't draw in the audience by kinda-ripping-off, you draw them in by using the same things that made the original show awesome (complex characters and situations, long arcs that still make sense in the context of a single episode, etc) in a new and different way.

Yep. And the ratings for SGU are about the same, or worse, than SGA's ratings, so they're not drawing in the additional audience they intended to find. *schadenfreude!*

"Bu-but we did character flashbacks like Lost, and everything's grim and some people are assholes like on BSG! Why aren't people tuning in?"

IMO, it's because these writers were barely competent at churning out pulpy, goony gee-whiz sci-fi by simplistically ripping off the likes of Trek and Star Wars. Trying to rip off more complex shows is demonstrating exactly how limited their abilities really are.
