sabinelagrande: (archer - what is this shit?)
1. So our big group costume this year was Rule 63 Avengers, and there was a Marvel crossplay shoot that [personal profile] coffeesuperhero, [personal profile] shadowen, and I went to. It was a wrench, because it was go to that or go to the only Supergate panel we could fit into our schedule, plus it wasn't the day we were supposed to wear our costumes at all.

But we roll down there, there are pictures, w/e, and while we're doing the big group shot, somebody walks up and goes, "Hey, can we crash your party?" And I look over, and Stan. Fucking. Lee. comes in.

THAT SHIT HAPPENED. I legit screamed, because I had no other recourse. I had no idea what to do other than let my feels out that way.

2. My other main costume was Pam from Archer (I did the black and blue one from the first episode) with [personal profile] arymabeth as my Cheryl/Carol. We're in line for a long time, because we were really early, and it turned out they scheduled this panel- Archer!- in a room with like 100 seats. So, obviously, the line got capped really early, probably an hour before the panel even started. The woman who was organizing the line was fucking on point, man, and she gave us permission to kick anybody out who tried to line jump.

Somebody did.

So everybody starts yelling at them, and I'm dressed as Pam, of course, and I'm like, fuck a bunch of this it is time to get in character. So I stand up, throw my dolphin puppet onto the floor, and give the universal COME AT ME BRO hands. And no shit, the line starts chanting "PAM, PAM, PAM" over and over. I lasted about a minute of that before I absolutely lost it laughing, but oh my god it was epic. Then the whole line got moved, and I'm walking past those same people, and they start chanting again.

This sounds like one of those "Cool story, bro" stories, right? But I swear that shit actually happened, and [personal profile] arymabeth and [personal profile] shadowen can back me up on this.

Then the panel was awesome, because Amber Nash (Pam) and Lucky Yates (Krieger) were there, but a whole bunch of the animators came too, so it was really cool to be able to ask them a bunch of different kinds of questions. Afterwards (while they were trying to kick us out of the room), the Pam who was sitting in front of me was like "Let's go try to get a picture", so we did, and Amber Nash was like "OMG YOU LOOK SO GOOD" and she hugged me and I was like ::FLAIL::

So, con. Spectacular.

1. I woke up at 6:30 this morning, but it was WORTH IT because we have a HOTEL ROOM at the HYATT for DRAGON*CON. \o/

After the Mariott fiasco experienced by [livejournal.com profile] dreadnot et al., I was expecting it to be fucking ridiculous, but it... wasn't. I got in and out in under five minutes. I didn't even have to reload or bitch anyone out or anything.

Then I went back to bed and had this long, involved dream about getting a PM from [livejournal.com profile] ninamazing. I think I was running some kind of rival meme to [livejournal.com profile] pocky_slash's Not My Fandom Fest (which is fucking excellent, by the way, and you should all go and check it out). And she was all, "It would be a good idea to have clearer rules," and "You can ask me for help if you need it!" It was several paragraphs long, and I remember going through all of them in the dream.

I did wear my PASIV shirt to bed, though, so it's entirely possible this was some kind of extraction attempt.

2. I am at [livejournal.com profile] leiascully and [livejournal.com profile] coffeesuperhero's! It is lovely to be here again. I often escape here during school breaks. It is a good place for recuperation, because we sleep a lot and drink a lot of beers and watch a lot of TV and eat a lot of good food. It is my happy place.

3. I'm sure there was more I meant to put in this post. I definitely have meant to tell you that the lovely [personal profile] mashimero made me a cover art for my John Sheppard/Tony Stark series! And also that [livejournal.com profile] bironic wrote me an SGA/Inception crossover that must be read to be believed (ARIADNE/WOOLSEY, Y'ALL).

Yes. Clearly I am very far behind. But now is for sushi.

Title: perfectly normal at night
Summary: Strange things are afoot at the Dragon*Con.
Fandom: Inception
Word Count: 600
Rating/Contents: NC-17, a whole stack of Blake's 7 references
Pairing: Eames/Ariadne/Arthur
Policies: Read my archiving, feedback, and warnings policies here.
A/N: This is one of those stories that 1) I wrote because we were at the Dragon*Con and tossing around ridiculous ideas, as it should be 2) had an endpoint, but then I kept going, and I got stuck on the stuff past the original end. So, screw it, I just cut it off.

1. I think [personal profile] arymabeth and I just got sort of mentioned in LA Weekly's blog? The article is here; the line was "if you followed Twitter during Dragon*Con last weekend, you would be privy to real time results of who smoked a cigarette with Doc and who was able to snap a cel phone photo with Jackson." and [personal profile] arymabeth and I were all "THAT WAS US, WE DID THAT, WE WERE THOSE JACKASSES ON THE TWITTER."

So yeah. We were probably not alone, though we were quite loud.

1. So I had to watch this really very poorly made documentary for class. And then this happened.

2. [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match reveal is up! I wrote One Step Back, which really has nothing to do with anything and is not really my style at all. And, once again, nobody guessed me.

3. Pretty sure I have the con crud. It is relatively mild, but I definitely woke myself up coughing last night and have been dragging ass ever since we got back. Bleh.

So. Dragon*Con 2010.

Oh my god, this report is over 3800 words long. This is why I don't write con reports. But anyway, here we go.

Thursday: Transit )

Friday: The horrors of prereg, Billy Zane )

Saturday: Nerds on Parade, Venture Bros, Adam Savage, Telesilla, Nuts on the Road )

Sunday: What the fuck. )

Monday: Transit. Again. )

1. RocknRolla. Where is the fanfiction? Why have the slashers not jumped on this movie en masse? Of what little there is, most of it is Archy/Johnny, which I don't even get (I don't want to read about Johnny. He's a Magnificent Bastard, but he looks like he doesn't shower). Dammit, what we need here is One Two/Bob. It is Gerard Butler and Tom Hardy. It is canon (er, after a fashion). Get on the stick, fandom.

1a. Oh Gerard Butler. I used to hate you so much for single-handedly ruining Phantom of the Opera. Why must you make me love you, with your accent and your badassery?

2. I have the saddest news, Dragon*Con people: Adam Savage and David Hewlett have panels at the same time. I don't know what I'm gonna do. Probably I will go see David Hewlett (because Jason Momoa will be there too) and catch Adam Savage at the panel that night that he is on with (and this could only happen at Dragon*Con) the guys from MST3K, the guys from the Venture Bros, and Dana Snyder. But I get the feeling that the entire con will be trying to get into that panel. Adam also has two panels on the Skeptic track that would probably be easier to get into, but... I'm not a skeptic (it's not that I'm not skeptical, I just think that the skeptic movement is MASSIVELY ethnocentric and self-congratulatory).

I don't know. I need to spent a good long time with the program and a highlighter.

2a. OH MY SHIT I JUST REALIZED GRAHAM HANCOCK IS GONNA BE THERE.

Does he have a panel where you can throw eggs and assorted produce at him? Because I would line up three hours in advance for that shit.

3. Classes have begun. Meh. This semester will be a pain in my ass. However, it is my last semester of classes. Ever. \o/

1. So lately my writing music has been Heligoland, because I am MADLY FUCKING IN LOVE with this album. The problem is that it's just a little too good, yeah? So I have to keep stopping in a middle of a paragraph to go "GOD THIS IS SUCH A FUCKING GOOD SONG, TURN THAT SHIT UP" and so forth.

And Massive Attack is going to be in ATLANTA in OCTOBER and I just found out YESTERDAY and I thought they had already done been sold out but they released MORE TICKETS this morning and asr;lktjgfwa;gihwrpgoihsad;fijdsf. WANT. Now to browbeat somebody into coming with me.

2. It has been a long time since I wrote something and thought, "This right here is a damn good story," but y'all, this story I'm writing? This right here is a damn good story.

(Does this story need a joke about Massive Attack? No. Does it have one? Yes. Whatever. Ariadne definitely listens to trip hop, and Eames... is from England. It's totally legit.)

3. I'm getting close to ready for Dragon*Con. We still have to convert [livejournal.com profile] arymabeth's BDUs and maybe hit up the military supply store, but that shouldn't take long. My Atlantis jacket needs a little touch up (the fucking collar has never lain right, so I will be attacking it with fabric glue) and maybe a thigh holster, but my Abby costume is more or less ready to rock (should I buy a Caf-Pow! cup? I'm not sure that I want to tote it around all day).

After much deliberation, I'm saving my Cally costume for next year. It's almost done, but it needs some work, and I'd kind of rather lose some weight before I do it (though obvs I am never going to look entirely right, because Jan Chappell is about as big around as my fucking wrist). But that just means there is room for Corset Day, which is a proud con tradition.

My life is pretty great, JSYK.

1. Still a few more days to play in the [community profile] mcshep_match Drabble Tree! Go Team Work!

I swear I used to could drabble. Everything I keep coming up with is just... strange. Oh well. I did my ten.

2. Saw Iron Man 2 again. I think, after reviewing the evidence, that I liked it better than the first one, even though it didn't have Jeff Bridges in it. Better pacing and explosions.

2a. Still can't believe the dog ate my Batman jammies. I'm pissed, but I do have brand new Iron Man jammies to compensate. They are, in fact, so loud that I don't know if I'll be able to sleep, but I love them anyway.

3. I've been writing more, but with everything coming up, I keep socking stuff away, hoping it'll fit into something I'm doing. And let me just tell you, either I'm going to bingo at [community profile] kink_bingo in a heartbeat, or you're going to see a lot of, shall we say, uncharacteristic stories all of a sudden, like, on a Tuesday. Something's got to give from my writing schedule, though, and it might have to be [community profile] sgareversebang. :\

4. Hurrah, I get to go back to Nashville tomorrow! Where I will sleep in my own bed, with my own pillows. Mmm. It will be sinfully decadent. Only clean sheets could make it better.

5. My Cally costume is all but done! I just have to put the wings on and do some heavy ironing, and we are in business. I had pictures, but they were all so unreservedly awful that I felt bad posting them (hey, I took them with my webcam. My integrated webcam). Now all we have to do is make [livejournal.com profile] arymabeth's BSG fatigues, and we will be done for the Dragon*Con! Hurrah!

1. I admit to skipping over a lot of Language Log's posts, but this post made me sporffle. Oh Geoffrey Pullum. Never change.

2. I am still in Fayetteville, with [livejournal.com profile] leiascully and [livejournal.com profile] coffeesuperhero! I ate the most glorious cupcake and petit four for breakfast. They were scrumptious. Now we are enjoying our rainy Saturday in the best way- sitting around on the intertubes and playing with the dog.

3. I have made a determination, flist. I'm totally going as Cally (the one from Blake's 7, not the one from BSG) to Dragon*Con this year. Specifically, I am going to make her bitchin green and white outfit from Horizon. It should be fairly easy, I'm thinking, except for the wings, which I think will just be a little fiddly. It's gonna be so sweet, y'all, y'all don't even know. Hopefully my hair won't be too long by then.

4. It may interest you to note that I have passed a thousand, yes, a thousand, links on my delicious account. They're all fannish, and most of them are fic recs, tagged by pairing, fandom, and plot elements. Enjoy them, won't you?

1. Re: the SGA plagiarism drama: I haven't seen anybody mention this, and I came upon it totally accidentally and in a spectacularly ass-backwards way, but [livejournal.com profile] jdr1184 undeleted her journal and came back to man up and apologize. Granted, her apology leaves a little to be desired (but I of course have no way of knowing if she's contacted the authors involved directly), but she did take total responsibility for her actions, which I thought was quite classy and unexpected of her.

ETA: Aaand deleted again.

2. OMG, Kink Bingo is over!

Recapping and pondering my stories )
Ten Recs! )

2a. And while we're on the subject of recommendations, Hang On Tight is a heartbreaking and lovely story that just really hasn't gotten the attention it deserves.

I swear one of these days I'm going to make a rec list of nothing but stories that made me weep openly. And speaking of which, if you haven't read Interstitial yet, hie ye to it, and bring tissues.

3. You know what I always thought would be insanely fun? A challenge where you had to write as if you were someone else from fandom (who had also signed up for the challenge, obvs).

Of course, the problem would be that if you didn't have a group of people who liked to laugh at themselves, it would be a non-stop drama fest.

4. I must, must break 30000 words on Big Bang before Dragon*Con. I've been slightly discouraged by the fact that I can't find a word count utility that's not fantastically unreliable. OpenOffice's built in one just sucks, frankly; there is absolutely no reason that my story should be 26800 words on one computer and 27300 on another. Even if it counted markup, which it doesn't, there is absolutely no way there are 500 words of markup in this story. And the most common Java applet leaves out numerals, and ARGH. You would think that 500 missing words in a ~27000 word story would not be a big deal, but when it's the difference between being in the middle third and being out of it, it's really incredibly discouraging.

Also discouraging is that I really still don't know what the story will look like when it's done. The back half is maybe 5000 words from done, and most of that is porn and John angsting, honestly, so it's pretty much fine; but the front half is still a shambles. I know pretty much all the stuff that happens; unfortunately, all the stuff I've left is political intrigue and Rodney freaking out, and it needs to hang together right or the story won't work. Maybe I'll try ploting it on notecards, once I get another five or six thousand words down.

4a. OMG DRAGON*CON. I HAVE NOT STARTED PACKING. MY ATLANTIS COSTUME IS STILL IN BITS. I NEED TO WASH EVERYTHING I OWN. But I have tomorrow off! So maybe it will get done.

5. ...I never did eat dinner, did I? I should get on that.

6. Is Semagic acting broken for anybody else?

1.
Writing CRITIQUE Meme!

Please? I'm forever doing these things, because I am endlessly, hopelessly insecure, especially about my writing. And I'm having a bitch of a time lately of actually getting stuff down. I keep having idea after idea, writing three hundred words of it, and then just totally... losing it. I think I've started seven different WIPs in as many days. I am still steady picking at my Big Bang, but not nearly as quickly as I would like.

1a. Speaking of Big Bang, there is a brand new, never been posted snippet over here, if you're interested.

2. I am officially back from Berkeley, about which I am both happy and sad. Happy, because my roommate eventually drove me batshit crazy; sad, because I am sad to leave my friends and dude. I'm in Jackson for the next little while, then probably a stop in Oxford, then on to Nashville, then OMG my birthday and Dragon*Con are in like three weeks! Fangirls! The Flan! Debauchery!

3. Still steady watching Blake's 7. ADORE it. I just keep watching it and thinking, "This is what the fuck science fiction should be like." And I have to say, I see why people ship Blake/Avon, but the show is quickly reaching "everybody on this spaceship is fucking everybody else, aren't they?" territory for me.

And I am still totally unspoiled, so if you say anything to me about it, I will bawl like a little girl.
sabinelagrande: (sga - z is for zelenka)
You know what makes me happy? Con videos on youtube!

And speaking of cons, all these epic emails I keep getting from mah fangirls about Dragon*Con (wherein we will, apparently 1) have an orgy 2) chase people around with nets 3) become like unto ever Mulder/Scully fic ever) amuse me to no end.
sabinelagrande: (gs - WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE)
This may be of interest to [livejournal.com profile] leiascully, [livejournal.com profile] coffeesuperhero, [livejournal.com profile] zhukora1, [livejournal.com profile] commodoremarie, [livejournal.com profile] solarwind, [livejournal.com profile] readiness, and anybody going to SDCC or Dragon*Con.

...I find it inexplicably amusing that those are the two most convenient cons for me to go to. I guess I'm technically just as close to Chicago Comic-Con as to Dragon*Con, but I'll still be in California then.
